Why Should We Serve the Church?

Why should we serve the church? As I mentioned in my recent sermon, Using What God Has Given Me, the PLACE to do church is everywhere, and the TIME to do it is always. Grab your Bible and look at these ten reasons we should serve the church – the Bride of Christ – His People. Here are the first 5 reasons:

1.       We are called to contribute just as often as we consume. As soon as you accept Jesus as your Savior, your call is to inject the life blood of Jesus into the lives of others, not to become a parasite that drains the life out of the Body of Christ!

2.       Because selfless acts defeat stereotypes of the church. Jesus wants us to be known for our love (John 13:35), not by our greed, selfishness, or hate. Plenty of people out there are painting unfortunate pictures of the church by their ungodly judgment of others. Let’s defeat those stereotypes and follow Jesus’ example of service.

3.       Statistics show that 4 out of every 4 people are selfish. Okay, so that’s not an entirely scientific study, but you get the idea. Jesus was consumed with pleasing his heavenly Father, not himself. He did this by serving others, not himself. If you claim to be a follower of Christ, you cannot do so if you are only serving yourself.

4.       Service is a physical expression of the humility we experience when we realize Jesus’ work on the Cross. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV)

5.       The church is the Bride of Christ. It makes no sense that one would say that he/she loves God and is not involved in any type of service to the Church – the Bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:22-27). Would you actually consider telling God, “Hey, I love you, but I have no interest in the well-being of your wife.”

Through the practice of servanthood-as-worship in local churches, believers and the lost alike come to more clearly taste and see God's provision and love.  As chairs are arranged, children watched, books sold, instruments played, local outreaches conducted, prayers prayed, and Bible studies taught, a great testimony of praise is offered up to God and Jesus is glorified…revealed to the world. (John 13:31-32).

Next time…reasons 6 through 10.

Serving Jesus by Serving Others,

Pastor Mike
